Rains to persist across Kenya with isolated heavy downpours - Weatherman

The Kenya Meteorological Department said rainfall is expected across several parts of the country starting Thursday, May 8 and continuing to next week Monday, May 12.

Kenyans have been urged to take precautionary measures as the country enters another wet spell, with thunderstorms and showers expected in most regions, including Nairobi and the Lake Victoria Basin.

In a five-day forecast, the Kenya Meteorological Department said rainfall is expected across several parts of the country starting Thursday, May 8 and continuing to next week Monday, May 12.

The department also warned of isolated heavy rainfall events, particularly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Coast, the South-eastern lowlands and North-western Kenya.

“Rainfall is expected over several parts of the country. Isolated heavy rainfall events may occur over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands and North-western Kenya,” the weatherman said.

In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and parts of the central Rift Valley, including counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot, rains will pour from Thursday to Sunday, with sunny intervals returning on Monday.

Afternoon thunderstorms will be widespread during the forecast period, although slightly less intense by Monday. Nighttime showers will persist in several areas, especially on Thursday and Friday. The weatherman said temperatures in the region will vary between 11°C and 30°C.

North-western Kenya, covering Turkana and Samburu counties, will receive rain showers and thunderstorms, with conditions becoming more stable by Sunday.

Night showers will occur over a few places on most days. Daytime temperatures will rise to 36°C, while minimums will fall to about 10°C by Sunday.

The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka counties, will also receive widespread showers.

Mornings will be cloudy, breaking into sunny intervals from Saturday onwards. Afternoon thunderstorms are expected in most places between Thursday and Sunday, with slightly fewer on Monday. Night showers will be prevalent through the weekend. According to the weatherman, temperatures in this region will range between 8°C and 27°C.

In the North-eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo, residents can expect warm conditions interspersed with occasional rain.

Morning and afternoon showers are likely on Thursday and Friday, while the weekend will be mainly sunny. Night conditions will be partly cloudy, with light showers in a few areas. Daytime temperatures will stay high, peaking at 37°C, while minimums will range between 11°C and 19°C.

The South-eastern lowlands, comprising Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta and inland parts of Tana River County, will experience sunny mornings across the forecast period. However, afternoon thunderstorms are expected daily in some areas.

Night showers will continue over a few places, with temperatures expected to rise steadily, from 30°C on Thursday to 33°C on Monday, with lows of 13°C to 15°C.

At the Coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale and coastal parts of Tana River County, showers are expected in the mornings and afternoons on most days. Sunday and Monday will bring occasional sunshine and a few isolated showers. Temperatures will range between 23°C and 34°C.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised residents in flood-prone areas to be particularly cautious and to stay updated on changing weather patterns.
